The county of Durham lies in the North East of England and its county centre is the city of Durham. The name Durham itself derives from the Saxon word Dunholme - dun means 'hill' and holme means 'island in the river' (where Durham Cathedral now stands). The Normans changed the name to Duresme, later corrupted to Durham. Because Durham was ruled by bishops until 1836 the suffix ‘shire’ was never added so the county is properly called County Durham not Durhamshire.

Durham is a small hilly county of less than 950 square miles and its main products are now from sheep and dairy farming. The county lies between the 2 great rivers of the Tyne (much of what is still classed as Durham actually lies within the modern county of Tyne and Wear) and the Tees.

On the eastern coast its industrial towns and sandy shores face the North Sea and high cliffs and islands are dotted along the coastline - Beacon Hill being the highest point on the Durham coast - while inland County Durham settles into the long valley of the Tees with its stone-walled fields and moors. Within the county there are contrasting landscapes from the peaks of the Pennines and farmland of the west to the industrialised south-east with its mining areas indicated by their big wheels - the county of Durham lies on one of Britain's richest coalfields and was once mined extensively.
